Each unit is designed, assembled, tested, and documented at our Stevenage, Hertfordshire facility before despatch, and is warranted in the field for five years from installation. Oil and Gas Electronics: Hazardous Area Manufacturing
Arkle manufactures electronics for customers operating in oil and gas hazardous area environments. Our customers in this sector hold the relevant ATEX, UKEX, and IECEx product certifications for their equipment; our role is to provide the manufacturing quality, process discipline, and documentation that their certified programmes require.

Understanding Hazardous Area Zones
Oil and gas facilities, refineries, and offshore platforms classify their working environments into hazard zones based on the likelihood of explosive atmospheres being present. Zone 0 is a location where an explosive atmosphere is continuously present. Zone 1 is where it is likely during normal operation. Zone 2 is where it occurs only in abnormal conditions. The electronics deployed in each zone must be manufactured to the protection concept specified for that zone, whether intrinsic safety (Ex i), flameproof enclosures (Ex d), or another recognised protection method under the IEC 60079 series standards.
ATEX (Directive 2014/34/EU) governs hazardous area equipment in the European Economic Area. UKEX is the GB-market equivalent introduced post-Brexit, governed under DSEAR 2002 and using the same BS EN 60079 series technical standards. IECEx is the international scheme covering approximately 50 countries. Our customers hold the relevant certifications for their products; Arkle provides the manufacturing foundation those certifications rest on.

What Hazardous Area Electronics Demand from Their Manufacturer
For electronics that will be incorporated into ATEX or UKEX certified products, the manufacturing process must be consistent, controlled, and fully documented. Component traceability, process records, inspection documentation, and non-conformance management are not optional: they form part of the technical file that supports the product certification and the audit trail that certification bodies and end customers require.
Arkle's ISO 9001:2015 quality management system provides the framework for this level of documentation and process control. Our PCB assembly processes reference IPC-A-610 for workmanship acceptance, our cable and harness assembly follows IPC/WHMA-A-620, and our conformal coating processes are applied and documented to IPC-CC-830C. For customers building ATEX-certified products, this gives them a manufacturing partner whose processes and records can support their certification requirements.

Offshore and Onshore Applications
Hazardous area electronics for oil and gas applications include process control and instrumentation, gas detection and safety systems, flow measurement electronics, power distribution management, and communications and SCADA interface assemblies. Both offshore platform and onshore refinery and pipeline applications are supported, with conformal coating and box build specifications matched to the environmental conditions of each installation.
